online movie services

After one of our radio show, a question was posted in our Ustream chatroom: “…would you use vongo.com for movies?…”

Quite some time ago, I compared services…first let me mention some competitors:

================================

Amazon Unbox

“…You can even transfer your purchased Unbox videos to a compatible portable device, including the Creative Zen Vision M…”

——————————————–

Unbox customers can purchase television series episodes for $1.99 per episode, purchase most movies for between $7.99 and $14.99, or rent the latest movies for $3.99…

——————————————-

…partner with TiVo, letting TiVo subscribers with Series 2 or Series 3 boxes download video directly to their televisions…

=================================

CinemaNow

Must use Internet Explorer?…

=============================

iTunes

The latest provider I’m aware of…I’ve never used their movie service.

============================

Movielink

Need Internet Explorer, and Windows Media Player?…

——————————————–

BLOCKBUSTER Total Access™ Plan that includes Unlimited Online DVDs 3 at a time plus up to 5 free* in-store exchanges for $17.99/month…

Unlimited Online DVDs up to 3 at a time plus unlimited in-store exchanges each month for $24.99…

===============================

NETFLIX

Subscribers who pay for just two DVDs a month, at a rate of $4.99, will have access to two hours of streaming video for free…

Subscribers can stream as many movies and television shows as they want, with no additional charge…the unlimited rental plans start at $8.99 a month.

Netflix’s streaming service works only on PCs with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer…internet connections with speeds of at least 3 megabits per second is recommended to get DVD-quality video…

=================================

Vongo

“Vongo Membership provides unlimited downloads (on up to three registered devices) for just $9.99 per month…”

—————————————–

“…certain releases are available for pay-per-view; they incur a separate fee, ranging from 99 cents to $3.99, and are only viewable for 24 hours from the time you press Play. Users also have access to a streaming version of the Starz movie channel.”

Series S and Series V Gigabeat devices from Toshiba Corporation had support for use with Vongo.

==============================

Again, keep in mind, this is information I gathered months ago when I had time to compare the services.

Would I use Vongo? Maybe. I prefer DVDs for reasons such as:
they contain “extras”…
I can use them on multiple devices…
and I don’t need to be connected to the internet.

Windows memory limits

Dave called after installing Microsoft Windows XP, and the issue of memory limits arose…

———————————————–

Before you go to the website I’m about to mention, you may want to lower the volume on your speakers: I was greatly annoyed by an advertisement on this site that had sound. The best “plain English” answer I found was at the “Dan’s Data” website:

“…you shouldn’t install more than 3Gb if you’re not running a 64-bit operating system.

“…a plain PC running a 32-bit operating system…shouldn’t have more than 3Gb of RAM…

“If you install 4Gb, there is no way to make all of the RAM between 3Gb and 4Gb available without installing a 64-bit OS, which you can’t do unless you have a 64-bit CPU. And even then it won’t necessarily work.”

———————————————

Per Microsoft…

Physical Memory Limits: Windows Vista
32-bit Windows
4 GB

Physical Memory Limits: Windows XP
32-bit Windows
4 GB

Outlook file size limits

During our radio show we had discussed Microsoft Outlook, and the subject of size limitations was mentioned…

Per the article, “The .pst file has a different format and folder size limit in Outlook 2007 and in Outlook 2003”:

The .pst files for IMAP or HTTP accounts in Outlook 2003 are limited to 2 GB.

In Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003, the Internet Message Access Protocol Version 4rev1 (IMAP4) accounts and HTTP accounts are configured by default in the Unicode format…making their limit to be 20 GB.

Files and Settings Transfer Wizard/Windows Easy Transfer

During our radio show we spoke with Doris about the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard…

(I need to say I have never used this. No reflection on this tool, but due to bad past data loss experiences I always “manually” copy files…”by hand” if you will. When it comes to backups, I only trust me.)

==============================

How to use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard with a wizard disk in Windows XP
“You can use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to transfer settings from one computer to another computer. The settings that you can transfer include your personalized settings for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, desktop settings, display settings, and dial-up connection settings.
“You can also use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to create a backup copy of your Windows XP settings. You can use this backup copy of your settings to restore your files and settings if you have to reinstall Windows XP.”
