Reach-out to your stolen phone

Your electronic device has been stolen…are you able to recover it?  Maybe…

—————————————————————-

There was an incident where an Apple MacBook was stolen, but it was able to be returned to it’s owner because of an application named Hidden:

“Hidden tracks your computer’s location, takes real time photos of the thief and screenshots of them using your computer…

“Hidden is a small application which sits idle on your computer until you need it. When your computer gets stolen simply login to your online Tracking Control Panel and mark your computer as stolen. Hidden will kick into action and locate your stolen computer anywhere on the planet, collect photos of the thief and screen shots of the computer in use.”

If your phone is stolen, you might be able to get it back.

Kaspersky Mobile Security is a service for Android devices.  It now has a feature called “Mugshot”:  the front-facing camera can now be activated remotely.  Images can be sent to an e-mail account, or viewed from the web-based control center.

Through the new web-based control center, owners can also:
Remotely lock their missing smartphone to secure personal information
Remotely wipe sensitive information from their missing smartphone
Remotely locate their lost or stolen smartphone using GPS, GSM or Wi-Fi, and Google Maps
Review logs of recent activities, such as their status and the results of any commands sent to the phone, or the installation of a new SIM card

Kaspersky Mobile Security also includes protection from spam, viruses, and spyware.

New Survey Indicates Kids want Laptops this Holiday Season!

A New Survey from E-Tailer Ebates. Com has found that the top requested item for the holidays from the kids this year is a new Laptop! Kevin H. Johnson, CEO of Ebates. “It’s interesting to see how the older kids want a laptop while the younger kids generally would prefer a smartphone or tablet. No matter which one parents plan to buy, between our coupons and cash back, we can save shoppers more than 20% on laptop and tablet purchases,” said Johnson.

In the Survey it was found that Boys and Girls ages 16-18 would like to have a laptop while Boys 13-15 would like the latest iPhone and Girls in the same age demographic would rather have clothes! Even though the push for new tablet sales on television and other media, only the Boy’s Aged 8-9 were wishing for a 10″ tablet. Whatever happened to the Electric Train Set…

This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of Ebates from October 17-24, 2012 among 1,121 8-18 year olds.

This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

Call of Duty Black Ops II

I received a copy of Call of Duty Black Ops II yesterday from Activision, actually the good folks sent me the Xbox360 Hardened Edition which includes a ton of extras for those chomping at the bit for more Call of Duty.

We also received the PC version which is available as a Steam Download. I’m still one of those that likes to have the title on DVD and for the television segment on KMSB Fox 11 always great to show the Box! Either way, I fired up the title last night and while I had a little confusion getting into the game, specifically to play the Zombie version of the game but eventually got in to play the campaign which featured a well produced story line. The game play is fluid and the characters are unlike I have seen before in detail! I completed a couple of missions which included calling in Air Support as well as firing big guns off a boat.

I would recommend the Hardened Edition for those fans of the Call of Duty series. The Box set includes a Collectible Limited Edition Game Case with special artwork, Limited Edition Challenge coins, Access to Nuke town Zombies game which puts you in a 1950’s Era Nuclear ravaged neighborhood and the Official Soundtrack by Jack Wall with the theme from Trent Reznor.

The game play is fun and action filled but certainly not geared at the “Young Un’s” with expletives peppered in throughout the game.

No internet July 9…for some…

(I apologize: this post is LONG overdue. I have been actively battling other malware, which kept me too busy to warn you earlier about this one…)

July 9, if you have trouble with the internet…don’t be surprised:

Lots of computers, “servers”, that help to make the internet work were infected.

“The clean DNS servers will be turned off on July 9, 2012, and computers still impacted by DNSChanger may lose Internet connectivity at that time.”

From as many computers as you can, I want you to do some things:

Go to the “DNS Changer Check-Up” website at http://dns-ok.us/ . If the computer is infected with DNS changer malware, you might see a red background…

Next, consider going to http://www.dcwg.org/detect/ and read the section “Manually Checking if your DNS server have been Changed”.

Facebook and Google are trying to help with this problem. You can read more about it at these webpages:

https://www.facebook.com/notes/facebook-security/notifying-dnschanger-victims/10150833689760766

http://googleonlinesecurity.blogspot.com/2012/05/notifying-users-affected-by-dnschanger.html

To try to help you not become infected in the future, take a look at http://www.stopbadware.org/home/badware_prevent

It’s best to use the latest and greatest operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux, etcetera), and keep all of your software (and hardware) updated. But you also need to be careful when using technology, and the internet and other services you connect to.
