KMSB Segment – Picking the Right Printers!

Segment from KMSB Fox 11

For today’s Segment, last week we looked at some Technology for Getting Back to School with a Laptop and Backpack. This morning it is still back to school with a question from many parents, What Printer to Get! While many classes for students allowing for Digital Submission of reports and essays, printing on paper is still something students will eventually find they need. We will take a look at two very different kinds of technology for printing that document, One Laser Printing and One Inkjet and we will explain the benefits of both.

First off, printing with Inkjet Technology has changed in big steps with Technology from Epson with the EcoTank. We look at the ET2720. Basically the EcoTank provides an economic advantage to those printing often on the printer which is capable of a variety of colors. In the past many have complained about buying a printer for X amount of dollars to find the ink which needed replacement rather quickly was sometimes more than the printer in replacement! With the EcoTank line, gone is the constant replacing of cartridges, instead, easily fill those cartridges with a supply of Ink to make it happen.

A Consumer can save money this way and according to Epson could be as much as 90%. The Ink that comes with the printers will generally last about 2 years! Each replacement ink bottle will give you about 4500 pages of print, that’s about 80 of those cartridges! The 2720 also can Scan and copy as well as print. Print speeds are going to be around 10Ppm and users can print from iPad, iPhone, Android with Wi-Fi Direct meaning no Wi-Fi Router Required. SRP Epson ET2720 $199.00

If Color is not a requirement and printing faster is something you would be interested in, HP has always been a great resource for Laser ink technology. We look at the HP M118dw.

Using LaserJet technology this Printer produces a faster output, about 30ppm and allows Wireless Printing. Like the Epson, No Network Needed, with the HP Smart App, a User can print directly to the printer from a Smartphone or tablet. When buying replacement toner, check out the estimated page load for toner.

For Example, the HP 92A Replacement will yield about 1200 pages, while the more expensive 94X will have about 2800. Remember also, when you buy a printer you are basically in most cases getting a “sample” amount of ink, the Toner in this will last for about 1000 prints.   The HP LaserJet Pro M118dw retails for about $89.99!

Into The Mind of Bill

TechtalkRadio Original Crew
When we started the radio show, it was in Palm Springs on the KPSI-AM Station. Mike O’Brien, Bill Grace and I had heard that Bill Gates had a home not far away in Indian Wells and always wondered if he ever checked out the only Tech Show on the Radio in Palm Springs back then. We did get a guy named Bill Gates call into our show once but..not THE Bill Gates.

While I will have to juggle Downton Abbey, Rambo Last Blood and Ad Astra this weekend, I still have to be sure to catch Between Two Ferns: The Movie on Netflix. To be honest I have already snuck in about 15 minutes of it while at work and am still laughing.

Another Must see on Netflix this Weekend is Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates. The show is a 3 Part Documentary of Bill Gates, What got him started, what motivates him and of course his thoughts on where we are going with Technology. Let’s face it, Bill helped drive computer technology with the Windows Operating System in Homes and Small Business. We look forward to this one as well, but it will have to wait till I finish Between Two Ferns. – Andy
